In the reign of Henry VIII, hats are most frequently mentioned. In Elizabeth's reign a hat called a copotain, capatain and coptankt was worn. " Slouched hats " were worn in Charles I and Charles II's time. -

(Sp. model spelled same [pálo] [see above] and [ájto] [see above])Watts describes this as a "wide-brimmed 'slouch' hat" and indicates that it was the forerunner of the Stetson hat. -

( galón 'type of ribbon' < French galon < Old French galonner 'to adorn the head with ribbons')According to Watts, the typical western hat, with a high crown and a wide brim. It is not named for its capacity, but for the braided decorations or galones that adorn it. The number 'ten' was added later by English speakers who mistook the meaning of the Spanish word. The DRAE references galón as a thin, strong, braided decoration used on clothing and other items. Islas references galoneado as a hat decorated with galones and worn by a charro. -
